Description
Suzuki Harunobu (1725? ~ 1770) depicted two women by the beach.
For the waves, the Kimedashi technique, where the paper is pushed forward from the reverse side, is efficiently applied. Additionally, the bokashi technique, a method of gradation, is skillfully used in many places in the river.
As the poem is by Minamoto no Shigeyuki 源重之, active around the year 1000, Harunobu must have imagined the scene in that era.
The poem - which is taken from the famous Hyakunin Isshu set - reads '風をいたみ 岩うつ浪のおのれのみ くだけてものをおもふ ころ哉'. The translation by Clay McCauley is 'Like a driven wave, Dashed by fierce winds on a rock, So it is, alas! Crushed and all alone am I.'
