Description

A scene of Shinobazu no ike in Ueno (不忍池、上埜). The signature reads Gakyo-jin Hokusai (画狂人北斎画), a name used by Hokusai when he was in his forties.

The red building seen on the island is presumably Benten-do. On a windy day, two women and a boy appear to be chatting in a relaxed mood. Hokusai depicted the young lady very elegantly; with her hand almost touching her mouth, and her long sleeves, as well as the hem of her kimono, are all fluttering in the strong wind.

We found almost the same image where this scene occupies the right two-thirds. A man shouldering a heavy-looking pile of boxes is drawn on the other section of the sheet, but no clear signature is visible in that version.
