Description

Under a group of lanterns, three courtesans appear to be talking while a boy points at something.

The artist is Kitao Masanobu (北尾政演) (1761–1816). He not only drew many scenes of Yoshiwara but was also very active as a writer, known by his pen name "Santo Tokyoden (山東京伝)."

The courtesans' kimono patterns and obi-sash decorations are depicted in detail. Masanobu also paid meticulous attention to the depiction of the autumn flowers on the folding screen, featuring chrysanthemums and Japanese pampas grass on the left, and bell-flowers and bush clover on the right.
