Description

Kuniyoshi heavily used Prussian blue in this work, which belongs to the genre of Ai-e (藍絵), or blue-printed pictures. This piece is from the series "Views of Famous Products of the Land and Sea" (山海名産画).

The image depicts three women divers harvesting large abalone, while several men swim toward tall, shrine-like rocks, which are connected by thick ropes and paper decorations, hang from the rope, indicates that it is a sacred area. This place is known as Futami ga Ura. (Futami can have the meaning of 'double take', but other interpretations understand this to be a reference to a couple.)

The red light spread from the rising (or setting) sun is depicted in great effect, and the floating clouds are beautifully rendered using embossing techniques.

Additionally, Kuniyoshi captures the gently lapping waves against the shore and the wildly swirling waves with his distinctive style. His grasp of perspective is another matter ...
