Description

The artist is Utagawa Toyokuni (1769 ~ 1826). He depicted many women of the ordinary classes, who look healthy and have a mild impression quite different from Utamaro's beauties.

In this image, Toyokuni drew three figures standing by a river enjoying the autumn view, amid the lingering heat of summer. The embossing technique applied to the fan makes the bamboo ribs look very realistic.

In the left foreground, a boy is pointing to the Hagi (bush clover) flowers in full bloom. The image on the lantern he is holding appears to be Ichikawa Danjuro, and the pattern on his clothes is Mi-masu (three square wooden cups), the crest of the Ichikawa family. He might be a fan of the Ichikawa actors.
