Description

A beautiful courtesan with a man who seems to be an entertainer working together with her.

The kiseru, a Japanese pipe, in the mid-17th century was quite long as seen in the image. Later, as it became popular among common people, the size became more compact, making it easier to carry.

The artist is Kubo Shunman 窪俊満 (1757–1820). His signature at lower left reads Shosado Shunman 尚左堂俊満. He is known not only as an Ukiyo-e artist but also as a playwright and poet.

The writer of the poem is read as Yagoe Torikane (八声鳥兼), but no information about him has been found.
