Description
This is the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo (瀬川菊之丞) depicted by Sharaku. Since Sharaku's active period was only 10 months in 1794, this is probably Kikunojo III.
The family crest on the kimono sleeve is the Yuiwata-mon (結綿紋). A literal translation of Yuiwata would be "a bundle of cotton". This bundle was used for celebratory occasions, such as offerings to deities and gifts during weddings.
In the Edo era, kabuki actors who played female roles were not only popular among the people but also fashion leaders, influencing trends such as kimono patterns and colors, hairstyles, and how to tie obi-sashes.
