Description

This is from Hokusai's "One hundred view of Mt. Fuji," created in his later years.

Plenty of water cascades down from the sluice attached to the cliff and a steep shape of Mt. Fuji is visible in the distance. Hokusai aimed for a striking composition.

In the foreground, a narrow slope leads up into the mountain, many people come and go. Two women are coming down with burdens on their backs, a man carrying a heavy load is going up, and many travelers pose along the way, enjoying the view of Mt. Fuji. Hokusai skillfully depicted each person's posture, making them appear very realistic.

On the other side of the river, another busy road is filled with many people and a horse.
