Description

This piece is from the series Famous Places in Edo and Murasaki of The Tale of Genji, serving as a parody of the 'Ukifune' (Floating Boat) chapter.

On a snowy day, a woman stands on a boat on the Sumida River, shielding herself with a half-opened umbrella. The landscape is blanketed in snow, and the snowfall continues heavily.

We wonder why she is standing while the other passengers remain seated. It seems difficult to maintain balance on a boat, especially while wearing 'geta' sandals. Is she too cold to sit, or perhaps she’s standing to better appreciate the stunning, snow-covered view?

Hiroshige captures the woman in the foreground, while also depicting the vast scenery as a background, including small birds, which add depth and enhance the sense of perspective.
