Description

Continuing from the previous page, this is another O-kubi-e of a courtesan by Utamaro. This one depicts 'Shinohara of the Tsuru-ya house' from the series 'Seiro Nana Komachi (青楼七小町),' featuring seven courtesans of the Yoshiwara.

Her left hand is raised as she tries to adjust her kanzashi, hair decoration, and the shibori, tie-dye, pattern of her kimono is very attractive. Here too, the very delicate ke-wari technique (a technique in which fine strands of hair are carefully drawn then carved one-by-one to create a realistic image) is used, making her beauty appear lifelike.
