Description

The young man is holding the girl on his shoulders; she is trying to pick a persimmon from over the high wall.

It is humorous that she tries to reach for a specifically farther one, while there is a bigger one in a lower position.

Persimmons have existed in Japan since ancient times, but they were all of the astringent type. Around the thirteenth century, a sweet variety appeared by mutation. In the Edo era, when there weren't many sweet fruits in autumn, sweet persimmons must have been greatly appreciated by people!

The artist is Suzuki Harunobu.
