Description

The image on the hanging scroll appears to be the famous Buddhist priest, Dharma. His hand emerging from the scroll and stretches toward the seated lady. As the lady reaches out her pipe to Dharma with the smoking side toward him, she must be offering him her pipe.

Since Dharma is a great priest, it is inconceivable that he would behave like this, with a dispirited face and appearing desperate to smoke. This must be a parody.

The artist is Suzuki Harushige (鈴木春重, 1747-1818), who was also a Dutch scholar under the name Shiba Kokan (司馬江漢). He made the first copperplate print in Japan.
