Description

This is a work from when Hokusai was in his mid-forties and is quite different from traditional ukiyo-e images. While people are realistically depicted, the huge rocks are deformed, usage of colors is dramatized, and shadows on the river are clearly shown. On top of these differences, his seal is not seen, and the edges are decorated with an arabesque pattern, resembling a frame - typically only seen in western work. The perspective, which was not normally used in traditional ukiyo-e, was successfully utilized here.

Obviously, Hokusai experimented with Western painting techniques in this work, and created a very attractive woodblock print. It is a heart warming feeling that even though he challenged new techniques, he didn’t forget to include Mt. Fuji!
