Description

This is from the series titled ’One Thousand Pictures of the Sea,’ consisting of ten images, produced about 1833 by Hokusai. In this series, he depicted the daily lives of fishermen working at sea and rivers in various places in Japan.

This scene is Choshi in Chiba prefecture; facing the Pacific Ocean and famous for rough seas.

Hokusai didn’t include the sky, but the entire scene is covered with wild waves, with a few people in boats. It is very impressive that he used many dots to depict the splashing waves. He must have been exploring a new technique to express the waves; something different from his famous masterpiece ‘The Great Wave’ in the ’36 views of Mt. Fuji’.
