Description

This image is originally a painting by Hokusai created when he was about 47 years old, and one of his representative works of beauties, later made into a woodblock print.

A beautiful courtesan is tipsy, leaning over her shamisen box. This image is exceptionally beautiful and attractive; everything is done so well, including her face, fingers, neck angle, and posture. Hokusai didn’t include a background, and we are just drawn into the beauty.

The vermilion shallow sake 'cup' (sakazuki) in front of the black box, which seems to have slipped from her fingers, suggests her slightly drunk and relaxed state.
