Description

Along the seashore, pine trees stand in a row, with clouds rising behind them and the magnificent Mt. Fuji towering high.

This is a view from presumably Suruga bay. The title ‘Senbon Matsubara’ translates to ‘grove of a thousand pine trees’, which stretches approximately 10 km from Numazu to Tagonoura.

As with the previous few works in this series, this image is not typical of most Japanese woodblock prints, but rather reminds us of Western painting.

Hokusai, challenger and explorer, may have sought to draw the scenery in a different manner.
