Description
This image was originally a painting by Hokusai. In the original version, a flying bird and poem are included in the upper part of the image.
Setting his character at an unusual angle - a exaggerated pose almost impossible in real life - was one of Hokusai's stylistic conventions.
The pattern on her sash is 'asa no ha', a traditional pattern intended to represent hemp leaves. The one on the kimono is bush clover. As this lady’s hair appears still wet and slightly messy, we assume she has just come from the bath. She wears her kimono loosely, is relaxing and reading with one knee raised, a classical pose.
