Description

This is from 'Shokoku Taki Meguri' translated as ’Visiting Waterfalls in Many Districts,' made up of 8 images. Hokusai created this series when he was 74 years old.

This waterfall is one of the best three falls in Nikko. The direct translation of the name 'Kiri Furi' is 'mist falling'; a huge amount of water cascades, striking the rocks at the bottom and creating mist.

While three travelers are amazed at the magnificent view of the waterfall, two men bravely climb up alongside the falls, to overlook it.

Hokusai challenged depicting the dynamism of the waterfall, and this work is undoubtedly a masterpiece.
