Description

This is from the kyoka e-hon 'Fine Views of the Eastern Capital at a Glance’, created when Hokusai was 41 years old, and still using the art-name 'Sori'.

He used very bright colors only for the young lady on the right and the lantern standing beside her; for the rest of the image, he used monochrome or very light colors.

The young lady's long sleeve, the hem of the kimono, and the sash are elegantly swaying in the wind.

In the days, small boats on the Sumida River were a main transportation method in Edo, now Tokyo. The two boats in the distance seem to be leaving, but her hand is making a typical gesture of welcoming. Is she perhaps gesturing to somebody 'off-screen' ... ?
