Description

This is from Hokusai’s famous series ‘One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji.’ The original title is ’Tsutsumi-goe no Fuji’, which translates as ‘Fuji seen over an embankment.’

Hokusai drew this image in perspective; in the close view, large basket and a woman carrying many things with her baby on her back are depicted. In the mid-distance, the sizes of three people change according to their distance, and finally, on the far bank, people, horses, trees and Fuji are very small.

The ripples of the river are depicted differently on right and left of the rustic bridge. He must have clearly considered the state of the stream both before and after flowing under the log bridge.
