Description

This is from Hokusai’s famous ’One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji’

Except for the foreground, everything - trees, rocks, and ships - is covered with river mist, and Mt. Fuji is vaguely seen in the distance.

In the original monochrome version, the ships are almost invisible, but once you notice the subtle shading, their shapes will be unmistakably recognizable. However, in this colored version, the shapes are clearly visible but appear as strange objects that are difficult to identify.

The foreground scene is very clear: local farmers are climbing the steep slope, each person carrying their working tools. They are depicted quite realistically, ready to start working in a fresh morning.

The diagonal line, running from the lower left to the upper right, splits the image into two different moods, yet these two worlds blend so naturally that the overall impression becomes very attractive by adding the deep perspective.
