Description

This is from Hokusai’s famous ‘One Hundred View of Mt. Fuji.’

In the distance, Mt. Fuji is seen beyond the tall reeds. In the middle view, five rafts can be seen. In the old days, turning cut down trees into rafts was an efficient method of transporting lumber.

In the foreground, three people are depicted: a child sitting out over the river looking at Mt. Fuji, and two men absorbed in fishing.

Tracing the two fishing rods, a triangular shape is made, which reminds us of Mt. Fuji's reflection on the river. Whether Hokusai intended this effect is uncertain.

Overall, this is a calm and peaceful image: everything moves slowly, with the subtle sounds of ripples, birds, and grass swaying in the wind.
