Description
This is from Hokusai’s famous ‘One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji.’
This is a scene from Lake Suwa which is located quite some distance from Fuji. In the image, the mountain can be recognized by its beautiful shape in the upper left center, beyond other mountains.
The boat in the foreground is a dugout canoe made from a large cedar tree, known in Japan as a ‘Maruki bune’. The rough texture of the wood, and the grain, is depicted realistically.
Three fishermen are on the boat; one stands at the bow, pulling a fishing line, while the other two are rowing. The waves are so well depicted that, while gazing at them, I even felt the sway.
