Description

This is from Hokusai’s 'Collection of Birds and Flowers' series, consisting of 10 prints. The signature is read as 'Zen Hokusai Iitsu,' indicating that this was created when he was in his 60s or later.

While we have previously introduced various landscapes and beauties from his works in this large set, this is the first example of a kacho-ga (bird-flower picture). Hokusai drew these flowers very realistically, depicting the veins in the petals and leaves, the flower buds, and the blossom in full bloom.

Iris is a beautiful flower that has been chosen by many artists. Hokusai too, chose it for this image and succeeded in depicting them very precisely.

In the center, a grasshopper rests upside down; it doesn't appear to be searching for prey but rather seems to be enjoying the quiet atmosphere among the flowers.
