Description

This is one of the images of ‘One hundred views of Mt. Fuji’.

Beyond the raging and dreadful waves, calm and composed Mr. Fuji is seen in the distance. The dynamic waves and the serene presence of Fuji create a brilliant contrast.

In the sky, many birds are flying; they appear as though born from the splashes of waves. The lighter tones in the sky - light brown and gray - do not detract our attention from the main drama of the foreground image.

The ‘‘One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji’’ was made two years after Hokusai completed the series of ’Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji’, which contained his iconic 'Great Wave' image. It is amazing that at the age of 74, Hokusai drew such a powerful image!
