Description

This is from Hokusai’s famous series ’One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji.’

In the original monochrome version, the title is shown as ‘Uneri Fuji’ translated as ‘Undulating Fuji’. He presumably aimed to depict the mountain reflected on the surface of the sea; its shape constantly undulating.

Compared to the previous image in this series, the waves are much calmer, quiet enough to show the reflected shape of the mountain. Various shade of blue and bokashi techniques are applied to the sea, making this image far from monotonous even though most of the area is covered only with waves.

It is interesting that the actual Fuji must be seen beyond the frame of the image, but the man on the ship, who is not rowing, doesn’t look in that direction. Instead, he appears to be looking at the reflection. The reflected one seems to be more attractive for him than the actual Fuji!
