Description
The name of the courtesan (Hisa), and the teahouse (Takashima), are shown in the rebus in the upper right corner: Taka (hawk 鷹), Shima (island 島), Hi (fire 火), and Sa (upper half of heron さぎ).
This teahouse girl is one of the "Selective Six Famous Beauties" of the Edo era and was featured in many portraits. Here, she gently places her hand on the collar of her kimono and turns to look back, a gesture that is both feminine and attractive. Since her eyebrows are shaved, it indicates that she is now marred. Utamaro skillfully depicted the lady's mature and elegant atmosphere.
