Description

This image is from “Eight Views of Famous Teahouse” by Utamaro. The teahouse waitress is checking her makeup and appears to be wiping off excess red lip color with a cloth. The upper half of her face is covered by a bamboo blind (sudare). The blind features narrow lines that are intentionally carved irregularly to create a natural effect.

The flower pattern on her kimono, which resembles a Dianthus, is designed in two ways - one in white and the other outlined in white. We also see the same flower shape on one of her hair decoration sticks.

The overall meaning of the poem is “People tend to be entwined by a long vine.” もろ人に しがらむ蔦の 二十間
