Description
This is from the series Eight Views of Customs in the Floating World 風俗浮世八景. A young courtesan is depicted just after finishing her bath, drying her ear with the sleeve of her yukata (cotton kimono used as a bathrobe). The shell pattern on her outfit is very attractive.
Although this publisher has left off the subtitle, it is known to be 'Autumn Moon After a Bath' 湯揚り之秋月, referencing one of the common themes from any 'Eight Views'. These references can be quite subtle, and as no moon is visible in the background of this print, we are forced to look for something else here that can be understood to be a reference to ... something white and round ...
Since the Autumn Moon is a symbol of serenity and calmness, Utamaro has reflected this atmosphere with this young beauty, fresh from her bath.
