Description

This is the courtesan Kisegawa of the Matubaya house, one of the seven beauties of Yoshiwara. The additional names written on the right are those of her 'apprentices', Sasano (さ々野) and Takeno (竹乃).

It is rare for Utamaro to depict a beauty with her hair let down; some resources suggest this may relate to a ceremonial custom associated with a courtesan's debut.

The embossed pattern on her kimono collar and the hexagonal design adds to her attractiveness.
