Description
‘Courtesan Tatsumi (辰巳) of the Roko (路考) House', from ‘Six famous Beauties’ by Utamaro. Here, the ‘Kewari’ technique is fully used giving the woman a more natural appearance.
The puzzle image at top right contains the courtesan’s name: Tatsumi Roko, formed from ’dragon (Tatsu)’, ’snake (Mi)’, ‘Japanese oar (Ro)’ and ’incense burner (Koro/Ro)’
The thread on her right wrist looks similar to the modern fashion popular among young girls - tying a thread around the wrist, and leaving it until it breaks. When it breaks the wish will come true! (S.I.)
