Description
A young woman reads out flower names from a silver coloured shikishi board in this print by Kajita Hanko. The brush next to her suggests that she is also practicing shodō calligraphy - perhaps she is copying down the characters for different flowers, then reading them out. Her sleeve "hangs out" of the yellow circle framing her, as does a branch bearing plum blossoms, suggesting that the circle is in fact a window.
This kuchi-e is from volume 9, issue 3, of Bungei Kurabu, published in Meiji 36 (1903).
