Description
The warrior and military leader Tomoe Gozen and her horse gaze at something out of frame in this kuchi-e print. Tomoe was a historical figure of the 12th century famous for her prowess as a warrior. In this print her wild beauty is accentuated through her loose hair, and her colourful armour catches the eye. You can read more about Tomoe Gozen here. The frontispiece appeared in volume 10, issue 5 of Bungei Kurabu, published in Meiji 37(1904).
Unlike many other artists of the time, Ogata Gekkō (1859-1920), the artist of this kuchi-e print, was self-taught. He mainly designed ukiyo-e and book illustrations, and won several art prizes during his lifetime, some from overseas expositions where his works were displayed. For more information on Gekkō, see the Wikipedia article.
