Description
A woman, possibly a farm worker, rests on a mat and watches baby chicks peck for food. Her worn sandals and loose strands of hair suggest that she has been working hard, but the scene itself is cool and restful, and the woman appears just as elegant as the more elaborately dressed women who appear in bijin-ga. The frontispiece appeared in volume 12, issue 15 of Bungei Kurabu, published in Meiji 39 (1906).
The artist of this print, Kajita Hanko (1870–1917), specialised in book, newspaper, and magazine illustrations, and is one of the most well-known creators of Meiji period kuchi-e.
