Description

A mother and daughter walk home after buying something at a new year market - it looks to be a fairly large hagoita (battledore, for playing a shuttlecock game). Two men who seem to be carrying new year pine decorations that they have either bought or plan to sell at the market are depicted in the background. The frontispiece appeared in volume 13, issue 16 of Bungei Kurabu, published in Meiji 40 (1907).

Tsutsui Toshimine (1863-1934), the artist of this work, is predominantly known as a kuchi-e artist of the Meiji period. Like several other artists in this group of kuchi-e prints, he was a pupil of the famous ukiyo-e artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.
