Description
Bound to a sakura tree and gagged, a woman bows her head as petals fall around her, her hair in disarray. The bokashi gradation on the bark of the tree has been thoughtfully printed, a little orange pigment being used to reflect the flame of the torch. Nunome-zuri (a technique in which fabric has been glued to a woodblock and blind-embossed to replicate the fabric's pattern on the print) has been used on the woman's kimono to give it some texture.
This print appeared in the Hōrai no Maki volume of Murai Gensai's eleven-volume (thirteen-part) novel Hinodejima (日の出島). The Hōrai no Maki volume was published in Meiji 30 (1897).
