Description
A beautiful young woman collects starfish and shells on a beach. Her brightly coloured kimono stands out on the grey sand, and her loose hair cascades down her back. As is the case with many other kuchi-e, there is the feeling of catching a beautiful woman in a private, and therefore more natural, moment. The frontispiece appeared in volume 11, issue 4 of Bungei Kurabu, published in Meiji 38(1905).
The artist, Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908), was a pupil of the famous artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and integrated his teacher's style with his own in the prints he designed. He was most famous for bijin-ga (images of beautiful women), which fit well with the genre of kuchi-e. For more information on Mizuno Toshitaka, see Dave's video on another kuchi-e designed by the artist.
