Description
Three women cool off on the bank of the Sumida River at evening in this print by Kiyonaga. Two hold hands, and another carries a fan with the mimasu-mon ("three-square crest") of the Ichikawa family of kabuki actors. The hairlines of the women have been very finely carved, and light bokashi gradation can be seen in the river. This print is an o-ban nishiki-e ("large size brocade print"), also known as an o-nishiki.
