Description
In this print by Kiyohiro, two young girls play with a handball under a willow tree, one grabbing the other's wrists. Their kimono feature decorative hagoita (battledore rackets) and plum blossom designs, and the scene is suggestive of early spring.
The print is a benizuri-e, an image woodblock printed with black, orange (beni) and, in some cases, green pigments. Monochrome sumizuri-e and beni-e (sumizuri-e with orange pigment added by hand) were the forerunners of benizuri-e. This reproduction is a nice example of a print by Kiyohiro, all of whose known works are benizuri-e.
