Description
In this print, designer Rekisentei Eiri (Chōkyōsai) has depicted the top-ranked courtesan Tsukasa-dayū of the Higashi-Ōgiya. She lived in Shin-Machi, Osaka, probably in the late 18th to early 19th century, and here we see her carrying a fan featuring a kabuki actor (probably from the Ichikawa family judging from the mimasu-mon ("three-square crest") on his robe). The distressed mica background is a highlight of the print.
This print is an o-ban nishiki-e ("large size brocade print"), also known as an o-nishiki. Very light bokashi gradation can be seen at the edges of Tsukasa's kimono and in the fan, mimicking the fading of older ukiyo-e that results from prolonged exposure to light.
