Description
In this scene from a kabuki play, the woman Nowake, who is in love with Teika, disguises herself as a horseman and leads Teika's horse on his journey to the east. In this print the two are accompanied by the karō (top-ranking samurai official) Ōe Saemon. On the right is the actor Arashi Kiyosaburō I as Nowake, in the middle, on horseback, is Ikushima Shingorō as Teika, and on the left is Ichikawa Danjūrō II as Ōe Saemon. Perhaps the kabuki play was based on the famous jôruri (puppet theater play) titled "Teika".
This reproduction is a sumizuri-e (ukiyoe printed with black pigment alone) with fudezaishiki (hand colouring by brush).
