Description
In this print, Bunchō depicts a night scene featuring the actor Ichikawa Benzō I under a large lantern. Although there is no title on the print, the mimasu mon (three-square crest) on the actor's sleeve confirms him as a member of the Ichikawa family. Patterns of thistles and waves decorate the actor's kimono. A pitch black background is uncommon in ukiyo-e, although Bunchō did produce a few similar prints, and in this print it really gives the impression of the actor being lit up by the lantern.
Very light bokashi gradation can be seen on the actor's kimono, although this is probably simply used to mimic the fading visible in older prints from prolonged exposure to light. Karazuri blind-embossing has been used on the lantern. The print is a hosoban ("narrow print").
