Description

This print shows a lively scene at the entrance to the Nakanocho Boulevard in the Shin-Yoshiwara pleasure district of Tokyo in the early evening. Assistants carrying lanterns decorated with the crests of brothels guide courtesans to their appointments. The street is lined with teahouses adorned with lanterns and decorations.

This print is an o-ban nishiki-e ("large size brocade print"), also known as an o-nishiki. Very light bokashi gradation can be seen in the sky, suggesting that night is falling.
