Description
Five courtesans and a customer relax at a brothel in the pleasure quarters in Hinkai, Shinagawa. The view over the sea suggests that they are on a higher level of the building, which in turn suggests that they are in a large and luxurious establishment. The colourful and elaborate kimono the courtesans wear, one decorated with seabirds, another with fishing nets, reflect their proximity to the sea. The cloud pattern at the top of the print is reminiscent of nara-ehon illustrations.
This is an ōban nishiki-e (大判錦絵, a "large size brocade print"), sometimes just known as an ō-nishiki. The invention of nishiki-e marked a major development in the history woodblock printing and largely supported the popularity of ukiyo-e through the mid-Edo to late Meiji period.
