Description
The famous poet Saigyō Hōshi looks up at the courtesan Eguchi no Kimi, who sits on a white elephant, in this print by Moromasa. According to Saigyō's biography, he met Eguchi in the Eguchi area of Osaka (hence her name) when Saigyō was looking for a room for the night. Eguchi, the mistress of a brothel, refused him a room, starting a clever exchange of poems on sex and religion with the poet. In prints she is usually depicted on a white elephant, the transport of choice for the Bodhisattva Fugen, the protector and instructor of devotees and travelling monks.
This reproduction is a sumizuri-e (ukiyoe printed with black pigment alone) with fudezaishiki (hand colouring by brush).
