Description
This print by Masanobu depicts kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu holding a puppet of the courtesan Matsuyama. Ichimatsu wears a kimono patterned with shikishi (a special type of square card paper used for writing poems and drawing) depicting the Rokkasen ("six poetry immortals") and tanzaku (a long, narrow card on which Japanese poems are written) of their poems. The poem at the top of this reproduction print reads "She winds her way through the rain at dusk and at last reaches Matsuyama" (translation by Sotheby's), confirming the puppet as Matsuyama. The original print was produced in the 1740s.
This reproduction is a sumizuri-e (ukiyoe printed with black pigment alone) with fudezaishiki (hand colouring by brush).
