Description
This series of senjafuda prints features illustrations by Torii Kiyosada and Torii Tadakiyo of characters from "the eighteen plays" - a collection of famous aragoto kabuki plays chosen by Ichikawa Danjūrō VII (1800-1832) and closely linked with the Ichikawa Danjūrō line of actors. These prints have been based on a series of illustrations by Kiyosada and Tadakiyo which originally appeared in a (full-size) set of ukiyo-e prints produced in 1895-6 by the publisher Hasegawa Sumi. Even the blind-embossing used on the senjafuda is loosely based on that of the original set!
The title panel of each print gives the series name and the name of the play depicted (at the bottom of the panel). Next to the title in each print is the square Ichikawa family mimasu-mon crest, the name of the character depicted, and the name "Ichikawa Danjūrō IX", one of the most famous kabuki actors of all time, from which we can determine that the main portraits in this set all feature Ichikawa Danjūrō IX. While Ichikawa Danjūrō IX is known to have created a new collection of eighteen famous plays in the Meiji period, titled Shin-Kabuki Jūhachiban, this set shows him in the plays associated with the "traditional" eighteen plays. For more information on Ichikawa Danjūrō IX (1838-1903), please see this Wikipedia article.
Each print is in the yon-cho fuda (four-slip) format. A highlight of the set is the karazuri blind-embossing used in the backgrounds. This set of senjafuda, possibly produced by the Toto Mutsumi no Kai, is one of the most well-produced sets in the collection. It may be the case that the main sponsor was 梅堂豊齋 (Baidō Hōsai), or, to use his more widely-known name, Utagawa Kunisada III (1848-1920).
