This print depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX as Sôma Masakado, with an unknown actor as Tawara Tôda, in the play Kamahige ("Beard and Sickle"). The image is based on this ukiyo-e, the twelfth print of the "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays" (Kabuki jûhachiban) series published by Hasegawa Sumi in the Meiji period.
