Description
While prints such as this one, a "table of contents" print for the whole set, are more text-based and therefore less interesting at first glance than the other, more illustrative prints, they are valuable resources about the production history of sets, often giving information that could not be determined from examination of the illustrative prints alone. Because of their textual nature, however, they are often not as highly valued as other prints, and thrown away or separated from the set they belong to. Sets like this one, which include the table of contents print, are a breath of fresh air to the researcher (at least this one!), providing much of the bibliographical information required for an accurate description of the set.
This particular print provides a wealth of details. At the top of the print in black we have the title of the series, under which appears the name of the main sponsor Baidō-kun (梅堂君). From the fact that the main sponsor is listed on the last print of the series as 豊齋 (Hōsai), it may be the case that the main sponsor was 梅堂豊齋 (Baidō Hōsai), or, to use his more widely-known name, Utagawa Kunisada III (1848-1920). To the right of the title and sponsor panels, in brightly-coloured stripes, is the table of contents itself, listing the eighteen titles of the following prints. Below are the names of sponsors who have probably donated less money than the main sponsor (judging from the position of their names at the bottom of the print). At the left is another colourful panel, decorated with vines, leaves, and a gourd. This panel gives a chronological overview of the Ichikawa line of kabuki actors, from the very first in the line up to the eighth, giving the owner of the prints background information on Ichikawa Danjuro IX, who will appear in the following prints. In a beautiful little detail, the background of the table of contents print has been blind-embossed with the square Ichikawa family crest. The brown dots which appear scattered over the print are offsetting from the oxidised metallic flecks on the facing pastedown.
This print was based on this ukiyo-e table of contents for the series "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays" (Kabuki jûhachiban) published by Hasegawa Sumi in the Meiji period.
