This print depicts actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX as Suhama Sôzu, with an unknown actor as Kûkai in the play Jayanagi ("The Snake Willow"). The image is based on this ukiyo-e, the sixteenth print of the "The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays" (Kabuki jûhachiban) series published by Hasegawa Sumi in the Meiji period.
